Future Mobility Campus Ireland (FMCI) was founded with the sole purpose of creating and delivering future mobility testbed facilities for stimulating research, development and innovation in the area of Autonomous Connected Electric Shared Vehicles (ACES), including Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) in Ireland. The testbed will be located in the Limerick-Shannon metropolitan area at Shannon Free Zone, Shannon, Co. Clare.

The project comprises of the upgrade and development of the existing Bay 80 building and repurpose as a CAV testbed control centre facility. This project consisted of the repurposing of an existing industrial unit in the Shannon Free Zone as a Control Centre and Workshop for the Future Mobility Campus which has been established across the Shannon Free Zone Area.

Construction works involved the complete remodelling and alteration of the existing industrial unit. Works involved the reconfiguration of the existing elevations to provide an external canopy, signage on the building, roof level plant structure, new personnel accesses and a new single-storey switchroom and substation to the rear of the building with all associated building works and site works.

The completed unit consisted of co-working office spaces, control rooms, 4 nr. workshops for conducting maintenance work on autonomous vehicles, meeting rooms, laboratories and canteen space.

Smart City

The project consists of the Design and Build of Smart City Testbed Infrastructure and public road network in the Shannon Free Zone, Shannon, Co Clare. FMCI is also equipped with test vehicles, smart city infrastructure covering 12km of roads, a dedicated low-speed testing area and a drone R&D flight hub. The testbed is equipped with multiple sensors, located throughout the site, along with high accuracy location systems, a data management and control centre. Also included were Civil Works comprising the provision of civil, fibre data and electrical works for the development of a Smart City Park for Future Mobility Campus Ireland within the existing Shannon Free Zone West Industrial Business Park in Shannon Co. Clare. FMCI’s open testbed of publicly accessible road network within the Shannon Industrial Estate. The testbed is highly connected with fibre network to a dedicated data centre. It is equipped with multiple sensors, CCTV, a set of traffic lights along with high accuracy location systems, as well as a data management and control centre.
